Pretty Little Lies (We Tell Ourselves) (Room 447)
In this session, we’ll start by exploring our own self-limiting beliefs, beliefs we have about ourselves that are constraining us in some way. You’ll come out of this workshop with an intention to acknowledge and reclaim this “limiting” belief with the support of the participants. This session is highly introspective and interactive, part reflection and part sharing under Chatham house rules (in true Davos style).

The Art of Building Authentic Relationships (Room 4203)
The best part of Shaper gatherings is meeting new Shapers - but when we get to "real life" it can be hard to build the same type of connections. Join us for relationship building activities that go beyond the surface. This session is dual purpose - you'll walk away knowing Shapers on a deeper level, and learn tools and strategies for building authentic, meaningful relationships outside the Shaper network.

Service Project: Peer-to-Peer Fundraising (20 spots available)
While you might traditionally consider a volunteer as someone who lends their time to a cause, peer-to-peer fundraising is another form of volunteering that can help a nonprofit you care about in significant ways - including growing their database of donors, and increasing revenue so they can more effectively deliver their programs.

During this project, you will learn how to run a successful peer-to-peer fundraising campaign. You’ll team up with a local nonprofit leader and fellow Shapers to brainstorm and develop a peer-to-peer fundraising campaign for their local nonprofit to implement.

Service Project: Food Literacy & Systems Change (15 spots available)
Sacramento is America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital. Our region has been an agricultural powerhouse for centuries, boasting a year-round growing season, ideal climate and a mouth-watering bounty of crops. Yet, 40% of Sacramento kids suffer from childhood obesity & only 4% of kids eat enough vegetables daily. The solution: food literacy.

Team up with other Global Shapers and help Food Literacy Center’s Food Geniuses teach a free, hands-on tasting and cooking class for low-income kids and families set in Oak Park Sol’s beautiful community garden, Broadway Sol, in the heart of the community of Oak Park, South Sacramento. You’ll teach kids and families how to measure, chop, and make a healthy snack!

The cooking class will be preceded by a short conversation facilitated by:
  • Amber Stott, Founding Executive Director, Food Literacy Center
  • Randy Stannard, Executive Director, Oak Park Sol
  • Food Literacy Center’s AmeriCorps Food Geniuses

Shapers will assist the Food Literacy Center’s Food Geniuses, or lead teachers, with a hands-on cooking class for low-income children and families located in the community of Oak Park, South Sacramento.

Service Project: Mobility: Gender & Safety (30 spots available)
Active commuting has a significant positive impact on our health, environment and economy. Yet, bicycling and walking make up a relatively small portion of commuting activity in the United States. Additionally, women are less likely than men to choose active transportation. Why? Often safety is cited as a major factor for both women and people who identify as transgender and/or LGBTQ.

During this project, we will discuss gender, safety and mobility; travel through Sacramento's newest parking protected bikeway (walking or bike share - JUMP bike)  and develop a campaign designed to improve perceived safety and increase active commuting among cis women, transgender and LGBTQ community members.

NOTE: To use JUMP Bike: you'll be required to download the JUMP bike app, create an account, and add a payment method. Due to software constraints, this is unfortunately not a flexible process.  You will not be charged during this project for the use of your JUMP bike.

Shapers will learn how Sacramento is integrating refugees into the local community, from support systems in school districts to community-based organizations that assist refugees with resettlement.

Shapers will visit the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Services (SFBFS) to learn about its various programs and services:
  • As the main food bank for Sacramento County, it partners with 220 local agencies to distribute food to individuals and families in need;
  • SFBFS also provides low-cost immigration legal services to help eligible individuals navigate the complex process of obtaining legal status;
  • SFBFS is also one of five refugee resettlement agencies that assists 200 refugees annually with a myriad of support and social services, including airport pick-up, food, clothing, shelter, employment, ESL classes, and community orientations.
Shapers will tour the SFBFS Oak Park Campus and learn about how the Clothing Program provides 300,000 articles of clothing every year to families and individuals in need. Shapers will volunteer with the Clothing Program to sort donations, hang clothing, and clean/organize the program areas.
